Crafting Individual Dance Journeys: My Personal Approach to Teaching

Throughout my teaching career, I’ve always held a firm belief that dance is as varied and diverse as the people who practise it. Each dancer brings their own story, aspirations, and reasons for stepping onto the dance floor. This belief has profoundly shaped my approach at my dance school, making crafting individual journeys one of the most rewarding aspects of my role as a dance teacher.

At my school, we are bustling with dance enthusiasts of all ages and stages. From adorable baby developmental sessions to British champions and delightful couples preparing for their silver anniversaries, we cater to a broad spectrum. Our styles range from Ballet and Acro for the youngsters, to Ballroom, Line Dance, and Pilates for our adult dancers.

Now, let’s contrast this with a friend’s dance school, which is solely focused on preparing students for professional dance careers. These students are wholly dedicated, with their eyes firmly set on top prizes, living and breathing dance every day.

Why highlight this contrast? It’s crucial for us as teachers to recognize and adapt to our students’ diverse aspirations. In my school, many arrive with just a spark of curiosity, perhaps unsure about which dance style will resonate with them or how often they want to practise. Some have definitive goals, while others look to us for direction. And therein lies our wonderful opportunity—to truly connect with our dancers and guide them towards finding their passion.

First impressions are everything. For some, simply walking into a dance school for the first time takes immense courage. Creating a welcoming, professional environment can make all the difference in setting them on their path. We’re in the business of not just teaching dance steps; we’re building confidence, sparking passion, and fostering a sense of community.

Over the years, I’ve witnessed many of our students, who initially started with a fleeting interest, grow to become key members of our dance family. They’ve not only honed their dance skills but have also formed lifelong friendships.

While some schools may specialise in one style or technique, I advocate for diversity in dance. Whether a student is looking for a casual class once a week, aiming for rigorous examinations, or aspiring to compete, there’s a place for everyone at our school. And if a student has an aspiration I can’t cater to? I believe in guiding them to where they can best achieve their dreams.

Ultimately, my teaching approach is holistic. I focus not just on nurturing dancers, but whole individuals. We strive to embed both technique and artistry, ensuring every student feels emotionally and socially supported. Dance is more than just movement; it’s about personal growth, community, and self-expression.
